Privacy Policy
The short version
SteelNote has no account and no server of its own. We do not collect, store, see, or sell your notes or your personal data, because there is nowhere for it to go.
Your notes live on your devices and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud. That is the whole story. The rest of this page just spells it out.
Who this covers
This policy applies to the SteelNote app for iPhone, iPad and Mac,
and to this website, steelnoteapp.com. SteelNote is made by an independent
developer based in France. Questions? Write to
contact@steelnoteapp.com.
What we collect
Nothing. SteelNote has no sign-up and no login. The app contains no analytics, no advertising identifiers, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs that send your data anywhere. We do not build a profile of you, because we never receive any data to build one from.
Your notes and where they live
Every note is a plain Markdown file stored on your device. If you keep them in iCloud Drive, they are also stored in your own iCloud account and synced across your Apple devices by Apple, using iCloud and CloudKit.
- Your notes are never sent to us. We operate no server that could receive them.
- iCloud sync is governed by your Apple account and Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- You can turn on Advanced Data Protection in your iCloud settings for end-to-end encryption of your iCloud data, including your notes.
Search and Spotlight
So you can find notes from your device’s system search, SteelNote can add note
titles and short previews to Apple’s on-device Spotlight index.
This index stays on your device and is managed by the operating system; it is never sent
to us. You can turn it off in Settings › Siri & Search on iOS.
Purchases
The free trial, subscription, and one-time purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Apple processes your payment; we never see or store your payment details. The app only checks, on your device, whether you currently have an active entitlement. Billing, renewals, and cancellations are managed by your Apple ID in your App Store settings.
Diagnostics
SteelNote runs no crash reporting or analytics of its own. If you have opted in to
“Share with App Developers” in your device’s privacy settings, Apple may
share aggregate, anonymized crash and usage statistics with us. You can turn this off at
any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Children
SteelNote is not directed at children, and it collects no data from anyone, children included.
Your rights
Because we hold none of your data, there is nothing on our side to access, correct, export, or erase. Your notes are always yours to move, back up, or delete directly, since they are plain files you control. If you are in the EU, the UK, California, or a similar jurisdiction, the rights those laws grant you still apply; there is simply no data held by us to exercise them against. For anything to do with your iCloud data, contact Apple.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. Material changes will be noted here.
